Instructions

  1. 1.Heat 400ml of water on the stove and cook the lentils for 10 mins.
  2. 2.Add the vegetable broth and cook until there is no water left and the lentils become very soft. Set the cooked lentils aside to cool.
  3. 3.Peel garlic and onions, slice the garlic into small dices and the onions into thin slices. Combine all the gravy ingredients other than the onions and mix them well until fully mixed. Add the onions to a casserole dish of approx 25cm x 15cm – it should not be bigger!
  4. 4.Peel the potatoes and grate them (raw), dispense of the water which drains out, we only want the grated potato flesh.
  5. 5.Add the lentils, grated potatoes, spices and breadcrumbs to a bowl. Knead until fully combined. It’s normal that the dough is sticky as it contains a lot of starch now. In order to roll them into balls of 5cm diameter you might want to wet your hands a bit. This will ensure that the dough doesn´t stick to your fingers.
  6. 6.Before you start shaping the balls preheat the oven to 200 degrees C. Now roll the balls and add all of them to the open casserole dish with the onions.
  7. 7.Now add the gravy, pouring on top of the balls, they should be completely covered. Place into the oven and cook for 30 mins.
  8. 8.Afterwards, take out the casserole dish to turn the balls over and cook evenly. Cook for a further 15 mins.
  9. 9.Serve with plain rice or white pita bread.
